Lori and I have been competing in Large Gazehound Racing Association (www.lgra.org) events for almost a year. Although we have lure-coursed our whippets, we are new to the straight track for the 200 yard sprint. Our girls will start to compete in lure-coursing next fall
A local LGRA official and mentor has recently made the observation that the 200 yard track is too short for the Magyar agar to obtain a full speed sprint. By the time they get to the finish line they are not quite going full speed. It is my guess that they would have to be going for a 300 yard race to get their bodies into the full speed mode. The most likely reason for this is their long backs. Their long backs also probably give them some advantages in gaining jumping height.
These dogs are very fast but don’t reach top speed as quickly as a greyhound. My estimate is that in a quarter mile race the Magyar will beat the greyhound, but in a two hundred yard event the Magyar will come in second.
Nellie Belle and Willow Bee, our two agar girls, have competed cleanly in seven events since October, 2006. Each and every time they have stormed across the finish line trying to kill the bunny. Both girls have been incredibly easy to train, although the box training has on occasion been akin to a full contact sport. Obedience training is a snap and you’ll amaze the instructors that a greyhound can actually sit. Easy as eating apple pie.
